这个数字超过了大流行病前的30倍，远远超出了经济学家的预期。申请失业救济人数达到这个水平，表明美国就业市场出现了严重下滑，这是很多美国人从未经历过的。
在新冠病毒爆发前，申领失业救济的人数一直徘徊在每周20万左右的较低水平。

RSM首席经济学家约瑟夫·布鲁苏拉斯(Joseph Brusuelas)表示，美国劳动力市场的这种“结构性转变”“说明实时失业率至已达到10.1%”。
为了限制新冠病毒更大范围的传播,会有更多的企业关门歇业并裁员，更多的员工将需要政府的援助来维持生计。
布鲁修拉斯认为，特朗普政府应该制定下一阶段的财政援助计划，“目标是填补州和地方预算的窟窿，并让美联储购买州和市政债券”。特朗普政府上周通过了《国际关怀法案》来应对新冠病毒爆发所带来的影响。
将于美国东部时间周五上午8点30分发布的3月份就业报告预计不会那么糟糕。根据路孚特（Refinitiv）的评估，失业率将从3.5%的历史低点小幅攀升至3.8%，失业人数将增加10万人。
3月份的报告会相对比较温和，因为这份报告所基于的数据是本月中旬之前的——即在数百万美国人申请首周失业救济之前。
